To Catch a Dollar, the documentary about Grameen America, is being screened on the American University (AU) campus tomorrow night at 7 pm in the bottom floor of the Ward building (the building located right on Ward Circle). It’s open to the public and free--but they will be accepting donations to their charity, Scholarships for Burma.

In response, Campaign director Larry Reed published a letter to the editor taking on March 14 issue with Roodman's broad conclusion.
"David Roodman has done a great service to the microfinance community, showing us where our words do not match our evidence. Unfortunately, he painted with too broad a brush in his March 11 Outlook article, “Why loans for the poor don’t end poverty.” He used a small amount of evidence to draw conclusions for a large and diverse industry. ..."

And just today, March 23, the Center for Financial Inclusion published a post on their blog from the Microfinance CEO Working Group. In their post, "“The hype is long over” – Microfinance CEOs respond to Washington Post article “Microfinance doesn’t end poverty, despite all the hype”", leading microfinance organizations ACCION, FINCA International, Freedom from Hunger, Grameen Foundation USA, Opportunity International, Pro Mujer, VisionFund International, and Women’s World Banking respond to Roodman's op-ed as well.
"This may surprise you. As the CEOs of eight global microfinance organizations, we largely agree with the substance of David Roodman’s March 8 op-ed ... [but], We have much more we need to do, but continuing to debate about whether microcredit – by itself – can end poverty is distracting us from the far more important question of what we can do to assist the poor."

The Brookings Institute also did a very thorough review of the World Bank report that everyone should read. Called "The Contradictions in Global Poverty Numbers" here are key points,

"The World Bank’s numbers for country and global poverty matter. They can affect the allocation of aid dollars. They frame the scale of the poverty challenge confronting each country and more broadly the global development community. They define areas of focus: Africa, fragile states and lagging regions in middle-income countries. And they are used to justify funding expansions of the concessional windows of the multilateral banks and capital increases for these aid agencies.

"Given all this, it is surprising that the empirical basis for country and global poverty numbers is rather weak. ..."

A string of suicides in Andhra Pradesh that put micro-finance under the spotlight, triggered a backlash because of which, MFIs found themselves reduced to fighting for their basic survival. No surprise here to find a variety of spin-doctors functioning as their apologists, fending off and neutralising any criticism that the industry faces currently, almost oblivion to the fact their support is to a slow sinking Titanic. Two of the most significant spins in this debate are those related to suicides and interest rate. In this post, we bust these spins.

I personally believe that micro financing model has a strong potential in significant reduction of poverty and improve the quality of life for all. Together with other channels like international small business loans, numerous projects and business can be made possible. Entrepreneurs can now even contact an offshore bank. I saw Ingrid Munro speak at the Rotary International Convention in Birmingham, England this past summer. She was awesome and inspiring. I had been in Togo, West Africa earlier this year celebrating the opening of five MicroTrust Banks for 340 widows, with financing supplied by our Rotary Club,the Rotary Club of Lome'-Azur, Rotary District #6630 and Rotary International-a life-changing experience for myself and my two fellow Rotarian companions. Ingrid mentioned that in April, 2010, there was to be a MicroFinance Summit in Kenya..is this still planned?
